Cut determines the internal brilliance of a diamond. The modern round brilliant is the most popular shape because the symmetrical radial facets function to provide an even display of brilliance. The intensity of this brilliance is greatly influenced by the proportions of the cut. The degree of crown height and pavilion depth alter the refractive angles of a diamond. They affect the internal reflectance of light back through the top of the diamond.
